Leading by example

We aim to walk the talk at our Shanghai headquarters when it comes to operating in an environmentally sustainable manner.  Our target is to become a Zero Carbon Footprint organization through concious decision making at all levels to avoid undue stress on our naturl environment.  Here are some of the initiatives we are working on:

 

Office Environment - Following the 3 R's (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle)

• Reduce
  • Using energy efficient LED lighting throughout the entire office
  • No disposable cups used in the office, just good old fashioned ceramic mugs (purchased as factory "ends" from street vendors)
    
  • 1" thick insulated exterior walls to reduce load on the HVAC system to save electricity
  • Energy meters installed in the office to measure and record the amount of electricty we use as a whole on a monthly and annual basis
  • Use more Skype and less face-to-face meetings requiring air travel
    
• Reuse
  • Boardroom table buiilt from an old Chinese door and a selection of reclaimed wood from de-construction sites
  • Front reception wall, desktops and lounge area floor all made from reclaimed wood
  • Full interior brick wall made of reclaimed brick from old Hutong housing in Shanghai that has been torn down
  • Extensive use of plants to help resuse and filter the air brought into the office by the HVAC system
    
• Recycle
  • Self decorated recycle bins for paper (made of cardboard), plastics (made of reused plastic) and aluminium/metal (made of reclaimed scrap metal)
  • Using the backside of printed paper for notetaking/scribbling
    

Workplace philosophies

• We are implementing a carbon neutral program which involves recording all the CO2 emissions that individuals in our company are responsible for emitting through their travel (planes, taxis, buses, boats, cars) and then balancing that with planting trees which over their lifetime will consume all of the CO2 we are responsible for releasing into the atmosphere.
• We aim to become the leading China-based supplier of energy efficient lighting in terms of pricing, quality and design.
• Lumen works with end users to continuously fine tune its designs and create new products to satisfy the growing needs of the market.
• A company policy of encouraging every one of its staff to contribute wherever they can to help us continue to innovate and grow.
• Encouraging the use of the most environmentally friendly form of transportation when travelling to and from work and when travelling on business.
• Encouraging suppliers and customers to make environmentally concious decisions in the day-to-day running of their businesses.
  

Environmentally friendly packaging solution for our bulbs

• Using 100% recycled paper and 100% recycleable paper
  
• Strong paper and design which protects the bulbs
• Openings in the sides of the boxes allow end buyers the ability to touch the bulbs without risking any damage
• No plastics used in packaging
• Seeking organic or natural ink and dye sources instead of chemical based inks
  
• Includes a hook for retail display which can be hidden depending on need
